Web 2.0 has been pimped as the saviour of the Net; the next-gen is all about user created content and social networking, and turning fan into director. Nice idea, but let’s face it, it is pretty fucked. Read the rest of this entry »

When it comes to installing applications on Linux (Ubuntu) on fresh installations, the less hassle the better. During my time using Ubuntu, I have found that there are certain applications that I simply must install after setting up Ubuntu. And to get around the tedium I have created the following script:

Andrew Keen, an anti-web 2.0 and social-networking-site author seems to be receiving some shit-kickings on the web after the release of his book “The Cult of the Amateur: How Today’s Internet Is Killing Our Culture and Assaulting Our Economy”. It appears that his disdain for bloggers (Even though he himself is one) has not been welcomed all to much. I will say that he argues passionately, and while I don’t think all users have an Internet Porn addiction, I will say that he has some valid points. It has been noted that I do not like SNS like MySpace and others, Andrew it seems suffers the same affliction to trolls and advertising.
I will ask this though: What happened to good old fashioned debate? Trolls have destroyed the fluidity of debates with closed minded (or should that simply be stubborn) comments. There is little place left for constructive arguing… and it is a damn shame!

Combing the data nets this week has yielded much that the Machine God and His TechPriests have found somewhat illogical:
The BBC has reported on the emergence of Digital Biographers, people who are paid to update other’s blogs and social networking sites. Our issue with this is simple: The act of digital worship in the spheres of Social Networking (SN) and Blogging should be an act performed by the self and not involve a paid third party to relay information that is supposed to stem from yourself. If one is unable to accomplish these tasks as a single entity or business, then perhaps you have spread yourself too thin? Also, do you really need to be on every SN site? I mean really, we all know MySpace is for kids.
Two other rather gruesomely interesting links have been submitted by TechPriestess Nemesis Divina. She has asked that I post these on the site, to help raise awareness of mans idiotically unacceptable behavior towards animals. Please support these.

http://www.news24.com/News24/South_Africa/News/0,,2-7-1442_2133044,00.html
Both of these are related and draw a rather pinpoint light on mans absolute idiocy!
And finally, a machine code echo has been heard loud and clear, as other false religions feel the burn. $660m to hundreds of alleged sex abuse victims. The Machine God is happy to see this information brought to light for all to see that He is the only way.
Long live Technology!

The Reg has enlightened us to a speed-hogging grandmother:
75-year-old Sibritt Löthberg from Karlstad Sweden just got her first computer, but it didn’t take her long to download all the necessary patches.Swedish news site The Local reports that Löthberg’s home has been tricked-out with a record-breaking 40 Gb/s connection - the first time a private residence has tapped into the internet at such high speeds. The blazing-fast connection comes courtesy her son, Peter Löthberg, a Swedish optical internet guru working at Cisco.
Ma Löthberg’s house was converted into a broadband dog-and-pony act in an effort to promote high-speed fibre connections as a commercially viable platform.”I want to show that there are other methods than the old fashioned ways such as copper wires and radio, which lack the possibilities that fibre has,” said Peter Löthberg.According to The Local, the secret sauce behind the connection is a new modulation technique that allows data to be transfered directly between two routers up to 2,000 km apart - with no intermediary transponders. This allows information to travel over huge distances without data loss.
With her blistering connection, Sigbritt Löthberg will be able to download a full high-definition DVD in just two seconds. Now if only there was a place for a Swede to utilize such a speed advantage… ®
This kind of story sits well with the DeathCult, yet we are saddened to see that this kind of great Machine God worship only takes place in other countries. The UK is far behind the race, with the ISPs here grabbing money rather than providing decent services, and are not interested in innovation or progression if it is going to cost them money or remove their easy income from fining users for exceeeding their cap on their ‘unlimited’ service.

Dean over at Deanish.com has created an awesome Wordpress theme called fight. While the vanilla theme is great on its own, there were some features that we were wanting. So in true Creative Commons fashion the TechPriests knuckled down and hacked the theme.
Here is our hacked version of fight: Hacked Fight Version 1.0
Changes in our version:
- Repaired a small bug in displaying the rss.png. Added “/” to the png path in comments.php.
- Removed the Flickr entry in the header.php; added in a random header script. Add your banners to the /images folder, and name them header_X.jpg, where X is the number of the banner starting at 1.
- Added Digg support.
